Established in 1911 and built on the site of the first pioneer encampment in St. George, Dixie State College of Utah strives to help students to define, shape and achieve educational and life goals. In a recent study conducted by USNews.com, Dixie State College was ranked first in the state of Utah among public higher education institutions and third-nationally in terms of lowest in-state tuition and fees costs in the 2005-06 academic year. The study included 459 public four-year colleges and universities across the country. In addition, DSC was ranked first in the state and 59th-overall in out-of-state tuition and fees, and was tops in Utah and 12th-nationally in room and board costs.

Dixie State College is a community college that offers associate degrees and certificate programs, but has also offered a limited number of high demand baccalaureate programs since 2000. DSC now offers a number of baccalaureate programs in core or foundational areas consistent with four-year colleges.

A FULL ROSTER OF PROGRAMS
Currently, Dixie State College students can earn baccalaureate degrees in 13 areas of study. Recently, Dixie State added four-year degrees in accounting, aviation management, communication, dental hygiene, integrated studies, music and psychology. Students can also earn bachelor’s degrees in biology, business administration, with emphases in accounting, finance and visual technology, as well as computer & information technology, elementary education, English and nursing.

In addition, Dixie State has partnered with Southern Utah University to offer four-year programs in criminal justice, family & consumer science, history education and psychology.

Dixie State is home to some of the top allied health science programs in Utah, which are housed in the Russell C. Taylor Health Sciences Center, a 78,000 square foot facility located on St. George’s Dixie Regional Medical Center’s campus. DSC’s nursing program consistently achieves one of the highest student pass rate among all programs in Utah on the RN licensor exams. Meanwhile, students in Dixie’s dental hygiene program score among the top-10 percent in the nation on board exams, including the fourth-highest pass rate on the 2007 National Board Exam at 93.3 percent. DSC’s dental hygiene program also posted a No. 1 ranking in 2004 and a national runner-up finish in 2006.

Dixie State also offers a wide variety of associate degree and certificate programs, including a number of health science and business as well as a number of adult education opportunities. The Institute for Continued Learning (ICL) is also available for retired and semi-retired individuals, as is the DSC Elderhostel program.

CULTURAL AND BUSINESS ENHANCEMENTS
Community involvement is a key ingredient to the success of Dixie State College. DSC provides many cultural opportunities for the community, many of which are now featured in the college’s state-of-the-art Dolores Dore’ Eccles Fine Arts Center. The College also sponsors a Celebrity Concert Series, the annual Sears Dixie Invitational Art Show, the Tanner Amphitheater Summer Concert Series at the mouth of nearby Zion National Park, and the Southwest Symphony and Chorale. The Dixie Business Alliance and the Washington County Economic Development Council, which offers a number of services to area businesses, are headquartered on the DSC campus.

ATHLETICS
Dixie State College Athletics are a proud competing member of the NCAA at the Division II level. In 2007-08, Dixie State began play in the Pacific West Conference, which includes teams from Hawaii, California and Arizona. In addition, the DSC football team joined the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) for the 2007 season, which features programs from California, Oregon and Washington.

In the Red Storm’s first year of NCAA postseason eligibility in 2008-09, DSC women’s softball program advance all the way to the NCAA Division II World Series and finished the season ranked #6-overall. Meanwhile, the DSC Red Storm men’s golf team also participated in postseason play, advancing to the NCAA Central/West Regional. This past fall, DSC’s women’s soccer team became the third program to participate in NCAA postseason play.

At the NJCAA level, Dixie State’s athletic programs consistently enjoyed time in the national spotlight. Since 2000, the college’s athletic teams have won four junior college national championships in women’s soccer (2000/2003), men’s basketball (2002) and baseball (2004).
