The Center's main focus was on developing and refining technologies for large scale sequencing and genotyping of DNA, the genetic material involved in inheritance of every organism. The Center was also developing technology for gridded DNA array detection.

The Center developed novel technologies in three areas:

1. Molecular reagents and techniques
2. Automated sequencing devices
3. Computer software.
