GOED Fellowship Program

Purpose

Founded in 2013, the GOED Fellowship Program provides emerging, ambitious business leaders first-hand experience in the processes that help foster Utah’s nation-leading economic vitality.  Candidates will meaningfully participate in the promotion of Utah’s local, national and international credibility.  Most importantly, the fellowship program will challenge emerging leaders to contribute measurable value to the State of Utah while gaining critical business experience that can serve as a platform for the fellow’s future career goals.

Selected fellows will spend up to one year in the position of “fellow”, helping advance the Governor’s Office of Economic Development’s vision that “Utah will lead the nation as the best performing economy and be recognized as a premier global business destination.”

Each fellow will be involved in one or more of our four economic development objectives:

  1. Strengthen and grow existing Utah businesses, both urban and rural
  2. Increase innovation, entrepreneurship and investment
  3. Increase national and international business
  4. Prioritize education to develop the workforce of the future

Development

In addition to performing daily assigned work, it is expected that fellows will proactively network and learn from contact with successful government, business and other leaders in the community.

To accelerate the fellow’s practicum with GOED, the agency will endeavor to host monthly “Emerging Business Leaders’ Forums.”  Forums will range in scope from dinner with government officials to candid discussions with professors, CEO’s and non-profit leaders.  Fellows are expected to attend these events, and are further expected to be prepared to engage in topics relevant to the speaker.

The GOED Fellowship Program is intended to supply fellows with an ideal platform on which to build personal network, not only with leaders within the community, but among other fellowship alumni.

In addition, high-performing fellows will have unique opportunities to participate in activities that will broaden their business perspective and strengthen their leadership.  For example, a communications fellow may have at least one of their articles published in a reputable journal, magazine or newspaper; fellows involved in the International Trade and Diplomacy Office may play an integral role in an international trade mission.

GOED fellows can expect to “hit the ground running” in the pursuit of Utah’s continued economic vitality and, as part of its stated mission to promote Utah to the global business market, GOED, the agency will help mold future leaders through focused training and experiential learning.

Once a fellow has satisfactorily completed his or her tenure, GOED will strive to help a fellow segue into his or her next endeavor, whether that be at a company or graduate school.
